1. Agroforestry Project, Rwanda

Agriculture is the backbone of Rwanda’s economy. However, Rwanda has been hit hard by rises in inflation and today, approximately 45% of children under the age of five in Rwanda suffer from chronic malnutrition and one in four is undernourished. The hillsides have been farmed extensively leading to soil erosion and a loss of vital top-soil. A lack of trees on the hillsides that bind the soil have led to landslides.

This program involves equipping smallhold farmers with the finance, skills, and expertise to improve productivity, soil health, and climate resilience of their crops.

2. Mangrove Restoration, Kenya

The project site was previously expansive mangrove forests but have since been depleted due to over-harvesting. Communities used to rely on these mangrove estuaries for high-value commercial fish species, like prawns and crabs, as a reliable source of income for the fishing community.

Restoring this area helps to maintain shoreline stability and safeguard communities during severe weather events. The protection and restoration of inland coastal forest habitats targets key drivers of deforestation such as uncontrolled fires and charcoal production.

Trees remove carbon dioxide from our atmosphere. This process, known as 'carbon sequestration’, involves absorbing CO2 and storing carbon, effectively cleansing our air and purging harmful elements from our environment.

Beyond their carbon-sequestering abilities, trees also act as oxygen generators, they provide shade and by releasing water vapours through their leaves, trees contribute to the Earth’s natural cooling mechanisms. Feel free to give a tree a little hug next time you step outdoors and thank it for it’s cooling effect on our planet.

TIPS TO REDUCE YOUR IMPACT

You don’t need to be an environmental hero, there are small daily changes we can make which lead to meaningful impact. Small steps count:

  • Remembering your reusable bags and reusable cups when going out.
  • Try to avoid using a clothes drying machine in the home, get out that clothes horse. 
  • Switch over to LED light bulbs and smart appliances. 
  • If you need to use airconditioning, set your temperature to 26 degrees celsius during the day, 22 degrees when sleeping. 
  • Choosing local, organic foods that are in season. 
  • Turn your water heater down to 49 degrees celsius. This can save 250kg CO2 a year.

Yes. You can always contact We Cool or any of our partners and verify that your contributions, both financial and in person, have been made.

We only work with verified tree planting projects. We work with partners on the ground to use technology that monitors the impact.

This includes per unit data that records timestamps and geo-coordinates of where your impact happened! We then monitor it to ensure real environmental impact and survival over time.
